Who is Cyril Ramaphosa, President of the South Africa & ANC?

Cyril Ramaphosa is the President of the Republic of South Africa and African National Congress (ANC). The former trade union leader and businessman, 65, was elected to be the President of the ANC at the ANC National Conference in Nasrec, Johannesburg in December 2017.

Here’s everything you need to know about him.

Born in Soweto

Though he grew up in Sebasa, Limpopo, Cyril Matamela Ramaphosa was born in Chiawelo, Soweto in 1952 to Venda parents: the second of the three children of, mother Erdmuth Ramaphosa and a retired policeman Samuel Ramaphosa.

In Cyril Ramaphosa’s first marriage to fellow businesswomen, the late Nomazizi Mtshotshisana who passed in 2008 after reportedly battling a long illness, the couple has one child together: daughter, Tulisa. After divorcing, Cyril later married Dr Tshepo Motsepe, the sister of South African mining billionaire Patrice Motsepe and they have four children namely; Tumelo Ramaphosa, Andile Ramaphosa, Kiki Ramaphosa and Mashudu Ramaphosa.
