Somizi Mhlongo whose stage name is somGAGA, is a South African choreographer, radio and television personality.

Early Life , Background And Childhood

Somizi Mhlongo was born on the 23 December 1972 in Soweto, Gauteng, South Africa. Somizi started acting from the age of 13. After the movie “Scavengers” (1987), he joined the broadway musical “Sarafina!” and got to travel the world for 5 years with the production. He later went on to star in the film adaptation of Sarafina! (1992), which also became the first big project he choreographed. As a young star in the 90’s he got to feature in other acclaimed movies such as Cry, the Beloved Country in the year 1995.

Somizi is the son to the veteran actors, Mary Twala and the late Ndaba Mhlongo.

Career

As the go-to choreographer and host for live events and music video productions his illustrious résumé includes hosting the South African Music Awards (SAMAs) and the red carpet at the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) in 2016. He was the lead choreographer for Miss South Africa from 1998-2008 and then again in 2015. He also had his own show on Cliff Central. “Mr Whoo Shem” is also the ambassador for the Department of Water and Sanitation and DSTV compact.

Somizi is the judge for South African most-watched reality show Idols SA and he also c0-hosts the breakfast show with DJ Fresh on Metro FM from 5am to 8am.
