Dr May Mashego-Mkhize is married to Minister of Minister of Cooperative Governance and and Traditional Affairs Dr ‎Zweli Mkhize. The couple has three children Nokulinda Horwood, Naledi Mkhize and Dedani Mkhize.

Educational Background

Dr. Mkhize holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery.


Dr Mkhize is a Board Member of the South African Women Entrepreneurs’ Network, as well as the Targeted Aids Intervention, and is a trustee of the Batho Batho Trust. She is currently self-employed as a Farmer of sugar cane and livestock.

Dr Mkhize’s previous appointments include: Provincial Chair for the National Progressive Primary Health Care Network and Chief Medical Officer EDH Paediatrics.

Drs Zweli and May Mkhize are the founders of Ikusasa LeAfrika Foundation (ILAF), a non-profit organisation based in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal focusing on improving the livelihood of communities.
